‘the down ride’
Leaving the Jupiter Guest House riders will head out toward the Roggeveldberg and the highest elevation of the ride at1700m before arriving at the first Check Point at the 46km mark and the start of the descent down Ouberg Pass. From 1400m riders will descend the Ouberg Pass following the same route used by the Pioneer Farmers in the early years.  In the 8km descent riders will have a unparalleled view of the Ceres Karoo from the Hex River Mountains in the south all the way to Calvinia and the Cederberg in the north. From the foot of Ouberg riders will head off in a south-easterly direction towards the lowest point of the entire journey, 477m and on to Check Point 2 at Zeekooigat, 97km from the start.  Here riders will be able to refresh and meet up with their support teams before setting off on the arduous trek to the next Checkpoint. On this segment, the road takes participants past the famous “honesty shop” and then climbs up to 992m before descending to Bizaansgat, a firm favourite and home of Check Point 3 at 146km where a meal awaits before the race for Check Point 4 and the finish at Kaleo. Leaving Bizaansgat in a south-westerly direction the route heads through the heart of the Ceres Karoo and the Karoo Poort to Check Point 4 and the second supporters point at the T/Junction of the R356/R355. Leaving Checkpoint 4 and with the final push to the finish, one travels along a farm road through a valley surrounded by high mountains while climbing about 500m over the next 15km to the top of the plateau at 1230m (This is an extremely stony segment of the route and it is strongly suggested that you have spare tyres or a puncture kit with you).  While slowly descending to Kaleo and the finish riders will pass through stunning Cederberg rock formations and the sprint for the finish, the welcoming arms of your supporters and the honour of being able to say...”I TAMED THE KAROO”
